We recently received a phone call and letter on behalf of George Thompson’s last remaining sister, Mrs Jessie Millar of Tyne and Wear, who wished to donate to the school a book of Burns poetry that George Thompson had been presented with as a child. The inscription, dated 17th April 1933 (pictured) reads: “Kinross Burns Club. 2nd Prize / Seniors awarded to George Thompson, Portmoak School, for proficiency in the knowledge of Burns”
This will now be added to our commemorative wall in the library, along with our other articles and letters about our famous ex pupil. It is lovely to see that the enthusiasm of the children and of our wider school community has touched friends and family of George Thompson and I am pleased we have helped in some small way to keep his memory alive. If there are any members of the community who would like to visit the school and see our library and our display in George Thompson VC’s honor please do get in touch as you would be very welcome to make an appointment to visit.
