Parents’ Group Sessions for 2015-16

Thank you to the parents who attended the planning session for the parents’ group last term. We had a discussion about the topics that would be of interest and looked at the views of parents who took time to fill in the survey that was sent home (thanks also to those who filled these in). A draft outline of topics is detailed below, with those still to be confirmed being indicated as TBC.

As well as a topic discussion, we also discussed the format of the sessions. Those who have attended in the past felt that the 2 hour long session was too long and there was pressure for start time with the crèche and group starting at the same time so that those using the crèche felt others were having to wait and the start time was delayed for those without smaller children. The format this year will therefore be:

1.00-1.30 – crèche settling in time and coffee available in library

1.30-2.00 – parents’ group session

The crèche is running weekly for a term this time. Several people felt this would be more helpful to jog memories than a fortnightly offering. This year’s programme is as follows:

  • 4.11.15 – Active literacy focus, the importance of reading and rhyme, helping with homework (mainly early years focus – Lee Fairlie early years development teacher leading this session)
  • 11.11.15 – Children’s Health including food and fussy eaters – Aileen Havlin, Health visitor confirmed. Active Schools input TBC (suitable for all ages)
  • 18.11.15 – Online safety including mobile phones and sexting (Lee Fairlie leading – suitable for all ages)
  • 25.11.15 – Children’s first aid – TBC, speaker dependent
  • 2.12.15 – Digital technology session including iPads and apps used in school / recommended for home (Lee Fairlie/Louise Gordon – suitable for all ages)
  • 9.12.15 – An overview of how we teach Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood in primary school (P1-7 covered) and how this progresses into secondary school (Stephanie Kellie leading – suitable for all ages)
  • 16.12.15 – Christmas coffee morning (all welcome to attend – even if you don’t come along weekly)
